Responsible for keeping utilities up?

We moved out voluntarily one month before our lease was up because we bought a house nearby (but paid all rent money due on time for the duration of the lease). Our landlord came and wanted to do repairs/upgrades on the house after we had vacated but before the 1 year lease was up and was not happy that the utilities were not on during that period. Was that our responsibility? We were gone, but the lease wasn't up yet. They were all in our name and we paid for them on our own. Thanks.
